The Magnetic Field in the Milky Way Filamentary Bone G47

Star formation primarily occurs in filaments where magnetic fields are expected to be dynamically important. The largest and densest trace spiral structure within galaxies. Over a dozen of these dense ($\sim$10$^4$\,cm$^{-3}$) long ($>$10\,pc) have been found the Milky Way, they often referred as "bones." Until now, none bones had their field resolved mapped entirety. We introduce SOFIA legacy project FIELDMAPS which has begun mapping $\sim$10 Way using HAWC+ instrument at 214\,$\mu$m 18$\farcs$2 resolution. Here we present first result from this survey on $\sim$60\,pc bone G47. Contrary some studies Galactic plane, find that is not perpendicular spine (i.e., center-line bone). Fields tend areas active star more parallel or random other areas. average neither plane nor bone. strengths along typically vary $\sim$20 $\sim$100\,$\mu$G. Magnetic strong enough suppress collapse much bone, but for most formation, notably less able resist gravitational collapse.
